On July 27, IMAN Chicago demonstrated “the world as it could be” by way of a local festival that centered reclamation, reimagining, and redemption in the newly developed Go Green Griot Plaza, located at 63rd & Racine in Englewood. The outdoor celebration featured a commemoration of the new wall and ground murals, live music, poetry, storytelling, dance, fresh foods, cooking demonstrations, movement classes, a ceramics demonstration, a community drum circle, screen printing, activities for children, and visual art activations. Headliners included Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter John Forté, poet, writer and lyricist Aja Monet, Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist Vic Mensa, and IMAN’s very own singer-songwriter Binta.

Alongside key surrounding neighborhood partners, Inner City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) will revitalize disinvested spaces through creative placemaking, public safety interventions, community organizing, and a holistic Federally Qualified Health Center. This entails the reactivation of an abandoned lot (Go Green Griot Plaza), a closed school, and the larger Go Green on Racine vision that includes reopening a closed public transit station through the Green Light The Green Line campaign for transit equity and economic justice. This holistic intervention approach aims to reduce the greatest urban life expectancy gap in the country.

Binta Kane Diallo
Artist
Binta Kane Diallo currently serves as the Associate Director of Arts & Culture at IMAN. Binta In her 5.5 years at IMAN, Binta has assisted with the build-out of sustainable programming in the Beloved Community Ceramic Studio, co-led multiple large scale community cafe events, co-created IMAN’s Artist roster, co-curated 16 (1) week-long Sacred Cypher Creatives Artist-in-Community Residencies between Chicago and Atlanta and expanded the overall capacity of the Arts & Culture team.
